When I was growing up, my family would always watch The Bill Cosby Show. As a youngster, I enjoyed the humorous dialogue between the parents and the children on the show. Now, as a young adult, I understand the significance of the show in American history. It portrayed a successful African-American family; the mother on the show was a successful lawyer, and the father, an accomplished doctor. I began to understand the lessons Dr. and Mrs. Huxtable were trying to teach to their kids and the audience. The messages they conveyed, for example, were to study hard and make learning a continuous process rather than a momentary event. They told us that we should put our best effort and use education to help our community. It was then, that I began to ponder a career in healthcare.

From time to time, I help my parents at the soup kitchens in Asbury Park or Trenton and have witnessed poverty locally. Also, I have been to India and seen that most of the poor people do not know where or when their next meal is coming. My relative’s set-up medical camps and helped out the natives with medical supplies and routine check-ups. In, December of 2004, thousands of people died as a result of “The Tsunami”, occurring in the Indian Ocean. I was overcome with grief and wanted to help, by volunteering in the ravaged areas in Sri Lanka, Thailand or Indonesia. Unfortunately, only the medically trained and skilled professional adults were allowed to visit these countries. My uncle, sister, and cousins were able to go to Sri Lanka and help in the medical camps and give the natives the daily products they needed to survive. In New Jersey, my family and friends gathered tons of clothes, food and medical supplies to ship in a container to Sri Lanka. However, I remained troubled that the lack of available medication and healthcare skills can cause so much suffering in other countries.
