Nanotechnology
Should it be further developed and pursued?

Nanotechnology is the realm of very, very small: its name comes from nanometer, a unit of measure so tiny and microscopic that a single human hair is measured as 80,000 nanometers thick. Through research, all of the possible applications of this new type of technology seem to be endless. Enhancements have already been seen in many products ranging from computers and digital cameras to clothing and cosmetics. In cosmetics, L’Oreal, Estee Lauder and other companies are making skin creams and other products with nanoparticles that penetrate deep into the skin, allowing more effective and longer-lasting delivery of vitamins and other agents (CQ Researcher 2). Nanotechnology is also enhancing computer monitor screens. Companies were able to develop organic, light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that glow when electricity passes through them. Two high tech firms, Xerox and Phillips, have already begun research on flexible computer screens that look and have the weight of paper (CQ Researcher 2). This is possible because the current monitors in use today have diodes that need a glass backing, but OLED technology will eliminate this making it possible for you to fold a computer up and put it in your pocket.
All of this seems fascinating to hear, but the question, “How is this possible?,” does enter your mind. Scientists work through specialized microscopes that are able to see individual atoms. They then can build essentially anything, one atom at a time. This obviously allows for things to be built on an extremely tiny scale, but also makes the product flawless since you are actually building something by putting individual atoms together. Other areas in which nanotechnology show promise, besides the enhancement of computers are in fabric and textiles, and early warning systems and cures for progressive diseases, and with the generation of electricity. Of the most...
