A rotisserie chicken will go well with that red-checked table cloth.
New to Towers Mall, Chicken Rules is a restaurant serving up rotisserie chicken. It has a few tables for dining in, but customers seem to prefer the convenience of carryout.
THE CHICKEN
Chicken Rules slowly cooks chicken rotisserie-style for 90 minutes. As the chicken roasts, it loses most of its fat while searing in natural juices. The skin absorbs a smoky flavor, becoming brown and crispy.
Chicken Rules owner Allen Johnston is proud of his chicken, which is marinated in a signature spice mix. A dash of cumin, chili and a mystery spice give his chicken a South American kick.
THE TASTE
I ordered a half-chicken for $8.95, which satisfied three hungry appetites. The chicken was a combination of smoky flavor and peppery zest on the outside with juicy, tender meat on the inside. It was crispy, moist and healthy. What's better than that? I'll tell you - a side of Johnston's green sauce, created by the owner himself. He uses this fiery pepper sauce mostly in wraps, but it's also fantastic for dipping.
THE SIDES
As for the homemade sides, Johnston and his five-member staff prepare them fresh daily. They use a small amount of butter and spices, but nothing in excess.
Determining which sides to order is the hardest part. I want to help, so I tasted several of the 16 options for you. (Don't worry, it was painless.)
I selected the potato salad, green beans with toasted almonds, macaroni and cheese, mashed red potatoes with garlic, marinated coleslaw and baked beans.
THE GOOD
