- My passionate interest in the biological sciences began at a very early age. As my knowledge of biology increased, I became familiar with genetics, which fascinated me, particularly research dealing with the sequencing of the genetic code. I believe that the future of humanity relies on this research.
I now have the opportunity to begin work in the frontline of biological/genetic research. I will do this with dedication, as I have always wanted to study at degree level.
- At High School I chose to concentrate on scientific subjects (biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics). These provided me with a scientific introduction to genetics. Other subjects I had studied, such as philosophy, gave me a firm grounding in debating, reasoning and essay writing skills. I feel that these will be key elements in helping me progress towards a genetics degree.
- In 2003 I had the chance to study Clinical Physiology at the Higher School of Health of the Portuguese Red Cross for three years.
- Among the subjects I studied were genetics, cellular biology, biophysics and biochemistry, which gave me a greater scientific knowledge of genetics and medical science.
I felt privileged as this degree provided me with an understanding of genetics. It convinced me that my future is in the field of genetics.
- My experience working in the field of cardiac diagnosis as a clinical physiologist has increased my interest in the disease mechanism: why does disease occur? What can we do to avoid it? How can we cure it? The possibility of helping to answer these questions has led me to pursue a career in researching the manipulation of genetic diseases, increasing our knowledge of these diseases and perhaps to help in their eventual treatment.
