On July 7th 1937, the Japanese army attacked Shanghai, the most important economy capital of China.
This issue made the condition become more difficult for China. Eventually, when the World War II broke out in
the end of 1939, the Japanese army had already captured almost 1/3 part land of China.
They called the plan the “Greater Asia Co-prosperity Sphere”. After Japanese occupied most part
of the coast line in China mainland. Although Japan seemed to have not
enough soldiers to fight in China in 1939, they attacked Pearl Harbour on December 7 1941, was at 8:00a.m. and then the Pacific War began. At the
same time Japanese armies attacked Hong Kong, Singapore and many other colonies in Southeast Asia. Hong Kong became the victim of the war again.

  The British government sent out only two British infantry battalions, two battalions of Indian army,   and two Canadian battalions with the total
soldiers of 11299.some artillery fixed and mobile a local volunteer force, a handful of small warships, two flying boats and three venerable torpedo bombers without any torpedoes. These forces
were too weak to fight with the strong Japanese army in Canton. In 1940, along with the capture of Canton, the islands in the South China Sea and French Indo- China by Japan, Hong Kong
became the isolated island in the Japan captured area. Sooner or later the Japanese forces will cross the boundary and occupy this pearl in the Far East. The only problem for the War is the time.
  Japan considered this war a lot, they sent out almost 50000 soldiers with the best equipments, airplanes and battle ships to prepare this war. On the opposite, even until the autumn of 1941,
an increasing number of the British general still did not believe that Japan could attack Hong Kong due to the dull fact that “they would not so crazy to attack this famous outpost of the British
