Hampton University Application Essay

Submitted by ldacres91 on December 26, 2008

When the news of my aunt's death hit me, I did not do the predictable. Crying seemed like a foreign action and I was too preoccupied with the feelings of those around me that I could not get a grasp on my own. For the first time, I was numb to emotional pain and was not able to break down until I attended the funeral. Coming from a spiritual background, I prayed to God for some sort of sign just confirming that everything would be okay. It didn't take long before I noticed Him trying to communicate with me. When I arrived on the beautiful island of Jamaica, the birthplace of my family, I was welcomed by a stunning monarch butterfly. I didn't think twice about it until I continually kept seeing it around me. Whether it would appear in the rainforest that flourished in the backyard or playing with the exotic flowers alongside the road, I would always come across it. At the funeral it flew around each of the main family members and then laid itself on top of her coffin. Automatically I began to cry, not in mourning but how life is so precious and the passing of a loved one isn't a "goodbye" but more of a "see you later". I realized my own life shouldn't have any limitations and I need to take advantage of all the possibilities it has to offer. Life is truly what you make of it, not what others dictate it to be.
