I have chosen to compare and contrast the Humanistic and Psychodynamic Theories. The Humanistic and Psychodynamic Theory are theories based on personality issues. The theories derive from phsychological disorders and struggle with personality issues, include dynamic movement of psychological forces, conflict and defense mechanism. The theories both represent psychology which is the study of the human mind. The theories both are explanations of people’s actions and the reasons for the choices they make. Humanistic origins are owed to Sigmund Freud’s Psychodynamic Theory and although it has Sigmund to thank and it originates from his theory, there are many similarities between the Humanistic and Psychodynamic Theory; however, the differences outweigh the is found that both have in common. The Humanistic Theory believes people are not controlled by internal and external forces and are basically good people. Individuals are able to conquer their problems on their own and develop conditions of worth. Psychodynamics’ Theory on the other hand says that the unconscious is the core of one’s actions. The actions people make are results of their inner struggle of ID, Ego and Superego. Aggression may be caused by the Id in people. Humanistic and Psychodynamics both believe that people behave certain ways due to treatment as children. However, Psychodynamics believes development is psychosexual in nature and there are five stages to psychosexual development and certain actions in each stage can lead to adults personality problems. Humanistic say children develop conditions of worth that carry on with them in life from lack of personal regard. The two theories are both based on the research of personalities and behavior and use tests to determine their findings.
