THE BANGALORE DATACENTER CASE
TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER PROCESS INTERNAL
The lab at Suns Bangalore India Engineering Center (IEC) datacenter is shared. Its the result of consolidating 13 individual site labs serving Sun R&D groups in India and worldwide.
Sun began the consolidation in 2006 as its Bangalore operations expanded and soon recognized the need for newer high-density equipment that would occupy less space and use less electric power.
In addition, Sun needed to contend with costly power outages and brownouts that were impacting the availability and performance of its internal R&D applications.
BUSINESS ISSUES
Consolidate and compress datacenter to accommodate increased load and new systems
Reduce electric power and cooling requirements
Maintain availability and efficient operation during power outages
Improve overall operational efficiency
Improve R&D capabilities and productivity
STEPS INVOLVED IN TRANSFER
1. PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
There were few pertinent issues due to which the need for a modular datacenter was identified
a. Various internal organizations and departments were placing different demands on the datacenters.
b. Continuous as well as variable workloads
c. Varying power and cooling loads
d. Some organizations need daily and physical access to the datacenter equipment, while others can access it remotely.
e. Building datacenters equipped with the maximum power and cooling capacity from day one was the wrong approach. Running the infrastructure at full capacity in anticipation of future compute loads only increased operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions, and lowered datacenter efficiency.
f. Random intermixing of air across the datacenter was not acceptable.
g. The compute equipment densities had surpassed the ability for raised floors to deliver adequate...
