In the question: What does it mean to say that the universe is “expanding”? We may say that the galaxies outside of ours are moving away from us, and the ones that are farthest away are moving faster. This means that no matter what galaxy you are in, all the other galaxies are moving away from you.
However, the galaxies are not moving through space, all galaxies move in space, this is due because space is also moving. Practically, the universe has no center; everything is moving away from each other. “If you imagine a grid of space with a galaxy every million light years or so, after enough time passes this grid will stretch out so that the galaxies are spread to every two million light years, and so on, possibly into infinity”˛.
The universe all together enclosures everything in existence, from the smallest atom to the largest galaxy; which formed about 13.7 billion years ago in the Big Bang, since then the world has been expanding and may be infinite at first glance. The part of the universe of which we know of is called the observable universe, this is the region around Earth from which light has had time to reach us.
They say that one famous way to explain the expanding universe is imagining the universe like a loaf of raisin bread dough. As the bread rises and expands at the same time, the raisins will move farther away from each other, but they are still stuck in the dough. In this case the universe there could be more galaxies out there in space but we cannot see anymore because they are moving really fast, this way the light of it has never reached Earth. But, due to gravity all of this has been kept in control and never let it to grow out of control.
The astronomer Edwin Hubble made observations in 1925 and was the first to prove that the universe is expanding. This American astronomer proved that there is a direct relationship between the speeds of distant galaxies and their distances from Earth. This is now known as...
