Ancient Egyptians and Greeks are recognized for some of the most remarkable art in history. In Egypt anything that was created was symbolic in a religious view, thus affecting every aspect of Egyptian life. During the old kingdom, Egypt’s greatest period of power and glory, enormous pyramids were built. The Archaic Greek period on the other hand, unraveled a growing increase of individualism. Poetry and sculpture showed a more personal approach and attention to intellectual and personal detail.
Egyptians loved to be surrounded by beauty in life and in death. Our knowledge about this ancient culture is based on the elaborate religious rituals related to death and the afterlife presented in so many different forms of art. The great pyramids for example, were built to protect the souls of the dead Pharaohs. The hieroglyphics inscribed inside of them, clearly tell us about the many aspects of the Egyptian culture. It’s important to understand that Egyptians weren’t even trying to create art; they symbolized the pyramids and all the other forms of art as a religious cause. They developed funerary traditions around the worship of their divine pharaohs, slanting sides of pyramids so that pharaoh's soul could climb to the sky and join the gods.
By creating the pyramids, the Egyptians generated the knowledge, strength and culture needed to build a nation. They built the pyramids by gathering giant blocks of limestone and placed them in a pyramid like shape. Years of endless labor from so many Egyptians was required in order to build theses massive monuments. From all over Egypt, communities would have gotten to know each other and a common bond would have been made in the making of a pyramid.
