A New Form of Helping the Economy
A modest proposal written by Jonathan Swift does carry merit in regard to balancing the economic problems that have surfaced in Ireland. Swift comes up with an idea which has to do with selling poor children in order to help the economy by providing people with more food and better nutrition. Swifts ideals of using poor children as a new form of meat to be sold at markets is definitely one possible way of solving the economic crisis.   He states many valid points in regard to how selling poor children will benefit the economy as a whole. The six benefits listed by Swift are all plausible ideals that are widely wished for and they would give the economy a very good advantage.
Swifts proposal is in answer to the massive growth of the underprivileged populous in Dublin, a city in Ireland. The recent rise in population growth in Dublin is indeed a detriment to their society for fear of overcrowding. The solution of selling children as meat would definitively solve the population growth problem while providing the people of Dublin, Ireland with a new form of nutrients and a new staple of food. With many of these children possibly growing up with no skills and nourishment the best possible solution in Swift’s opinion is to turn these people, who do not nor ever will contribute, into meat for slaughter. Swift’s motive isn’t to kill off multiple, random people for means of food. He wants to have it so that the people who basically just take up space and make the economy worse than it needs to be should just get killed off in order to make the people who have a purpose in life able to survive efficiently. Statistics from the Population Reference Beraeu suggest that “Facile references to food surplus most unfortunately divert attention from the fundamental world problem, which is of staggering proportions, the world population doubling time appears to be 40 years” (Population Reference Bureau).
