The role of the public relations representatives for companies encompasses numerous responsibilities. A high-level public relations executive may be a vice president involved in preparation of company procedures for communication to the external publics. Entry level PR representatives may be assigned research duties, which can include making calls and planning events (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006). Organizational functions of public relations include the actions that relate to the organizations. An organizational purpose is mainly in-house oriented and concentrates on the product or service and the communication associated according to the approach desired by the organization. Communication management, government affairs, media, publicity, and investor relations can be considered organizational functions. Publicity and social responsibility are typically classified as societal tasks. The purpose of societal public relations is to sustain acceptance among the public. Events’ linking an organization to the population, society, or outside world is known as societal public relations.
As the name implies, the societal role is commonly external to the company and preserves a beneficial relationship between the external environment and the organization. Other examples of societal public relations include marketing communications, consumer relations, public affairs, and social responsibility.
