Geology and communication are generally not considered closely related subjects. Geology, the science devoted to the study of the Earth and the rocks that compose it, and communication, the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information to another, as by speech, signals, writing, or behavior, are obviously on different sides of the spectrum from one another. Though communication seems unnecessary in this field, as it is difficult to converse with a rock, in actuality, communication is an integral part of a geologist’s daily work. As Yates, Williams, and Dujardin explains “Science is fundamentally about communication. Un-communicated Science in essence does not exist.” Throughout my life, I have learned how to communicate with many different people in many different environments throughout my life, which is not only applicable to social necessities, but also towards my career as a Geologist. Unfortunately, my formal writing skills and public speaking skills leave something to be desired but fortunately for me I still have four years of college to sharpen all of my communication skills before I am be put to the test as a Geologist with something very important to communicate.
Geologists spend much of their time doing field and laboratory work, which goes without saying, but they also spend much of their time in an office. The LSU Geological Home Page shows incoming Geologists this same fact right from the start. “They (Geologists) often divide their time among work in the field, the laboratory, and the office.” The office work for Geologists consists mostly of integrating field and laboratory data and preparing reports and presentations, which include more than just verbal communication but also visual communication such as maps and diagrams to illustrate the results of their studies.
