Even though I didn’t experience a storm and crash-lands on a mysterious island, touch wood, the survival techniques that were used by the prisoners were fairly related to the things I learned in the outdoors program (and in the future, the search and rescue program). Moreover, the engineer who was one of the survivors used basic physics which I learned in my physics class. Therefore, I was clearly and visually understood what happened in the story.

The survival techniques that were used by the prisoners were similar to the things that I learned in the outdoors program: tying knots, lighting a fire, using herbs for medication and etc. Tying knots was my first skill that I learned in sailing and in wall climbing when I was in grade 10. At first, it was a bit hard to figure out the steps to tie a knot. It might be a bit unconvincing, but I think it was similar to the prisoners that are trying to figure out a way to survive on the foreign land. Lighting a fire, I think is a magic and a wonderful thing that I’ve learned. It gives you warmth and the sparkling of the ashes are liked the shining of the stars. I will never get bored just to look at the fire at night. Since I want to be a doctor, the skill of using herbs for medication is very helpful. I learned this skill from one of my outdoor coaches, Ms. Ferris. It was just amazing how a single plant could save lives and injuries!

It was hard to compare me with those prisoners. But the skills that they used for survival, I sure knew what they were. It was just amazing that these simple skills could save your life in a mysterious island.
