Taking risks has always been a natural progression for me, must be something in the blood, if I feel strongly about something I want, I go after it with full force. Now that does not mean that I never get nervous about taking on new ventures in life, it simply means when I look back on the two generations of risks takers in my family, I know if I do not try, I cannot move forward and that gives me the confidence I need to tackle whatever life puts in front of me. For example, my father was eighteen years old when he came to this country in search of a new life. His initial motive to come to the United States was in order to help out his mother financially in hopes to send his younger brother and sister to college. My father actually did not plan to stay in the States; just come here, make some money and return to Mexico like numerous Mexicans do. Then one month became six, six months became a year, before he realized it the years passed by and he fell in love with the opportunities this country offers. He started believing in the American Dream; for my dad, this meant starting his own family. He met many challenges, and he immediately found out that he would have to learn the language in order to succeed and achieve his dreams. It was then that he began going to night school after work, and it is also where he met my mother, Mireya.
Heat is pounding on my skin, sweat dripping down, muffled yells are all around, there is a sudden burst of energy and thrill going through my system as the nerves rise up, and I say to myself, “Just spin the ball!” Then I hear my mom’s thick accent shout out to me, “Come on Jenny, you can do it!” as well as my father’s voice cry out “Push mija (“honey”), and finish!” and I know that I have to push hard off the mound and finish every pitch. That gives me the confidence and strength to face any challenge on the mound and in life. When I was eight years old and living in California, I began playing softball. I had always...
