CONFLICT ANAYLSIS OF STEEL MAGNOLIAS: CLIMATES, GENDER & POWER STRUGGLES Jason Striker NAU – GCC ABSTRACT “…the movie is primarily a celebration of the love, strength, and compassion of six Louisianian women which by examining the conflictual climates and how they are mediated, along with the differences in gendered conflict styles, while lastly understanding the power exchanges within relationships will allow us to relate these strategies to our own lives. We will see that although the relationships in this movie are steadfast and loving, they are also challenged by events that trigger conflicts that bring about introspection, growth, death, but above all an increase in the quality of the relationships making them as tough as steel magnolias.” Keywords: Power, gendered, conflictual, climates, introspection, struggle Steel Magnolias is the story of six small-town southern women who care deeply about each other and accompany one another through the conflicts that affect our human condition. At the heart of the story is M'LynnEatenton and her sweetly effervescent but diabetic daughter Shelby. The mother and daughter love each other, yet struggle for control of Shelby's life. Despite warnings from doctors that pregnancy might involve complications that could be life-threatening, Shelby decides - much to M'Lynn's chagrin - to have a child.
In this story Panttaja says it is both mothers that are wicked. Panttaja states the real mother “plots and schemes, and she wins” (Panttaja 660) when it comes to fulfilling the wishes of Ashputtle. But actually the two mothers have the same goal in mind; to have their daughters married off and have a joyful life. To be able to do this, the real mother puts a charm on the prince to make him fall in love with Ashputtle instead of anyone else. The prince did not dance with anyone else all night and would always say “she is my partner” (Grimm 630).
Throughout the two works, the color red was associated with the temptresses Ethan and Newland fell in love with. When Ethan first spotted Mattie Silver, there was a “cherry coloured ‘fascinator’ about her head”(26) and Ethan loved her instantly, but thoughts of his wife Zeena, a sickly woman waiting for him at home, had caused him to refrain from revealing his true feelings. On the other hand, when Newland had his first chance to reunite with Ellen Olenska, she was draped in a long red dress at the van der Luydens’ dinner party. In both instances, the women were wearing the color red, symbolic of both the passion in the affairs between the two pairs and the danger of their relationships. In Ethan Frome, when Ethan thought about Mattie’s room, he envisioned her red and white quilt
In the play, Shakespeare puts the character Juliet in a typical situation, which was an arranged marriage and this was a role taken by all women of that time. The parents would choose a husband for their daughter, no matter her age, although arranged marriages where the norm the nurse cares for Juliet enough to trust her decisions and also goes to extremes to bring happiness to Juliet. The Nurse was a servant of the Capulet family and it is common to have a nurse in wealthy families. The Nurse has looked after Juliet since she was a baby. The Nurse is a very funny, disturbing and
Situation comedy is “based on creating a simple comic premise for each program.” (p. 130) Basically situation comedy brought fun and comic relief to TV. Lucy first starred in, My Favorite Husband. People and even herself saw what a funny, humorous person she was. She was able to find her “Lucy persona,” which was the attractive, zany, and irresistible side to her. In the book it says, “Unlike vaudeo, many TV situation comedies revolved around women stars.” (p. 132) Lucy, being one of these women stars, hit it off big when I Love Lucy started.
Equality To be imprisoned within a situation where normality is questioned could be said to be a living hell. That hell manifests itself in Ariel Levy’s “The Lesbian Bride’s Handbook,” a written recount of a lesbian woman’s experience of something fundamentally known as the happiest moment of a young woman’s life, her marriage. Levy goes on to describe the significance of color in her wedding dress since, the color to Levy reflected the denial of authorization in her wedding , she delivers this striking message through the use of comedy and emotional seriousness. In “ First” by Ryan Van Meter we are served a quiet, intimate portrait of a five year old burgeoning first crush, as well as his family’s attempt to quiet this new development.
For example I recently saw the phenomenal film Their Eyes Were Watching God. Halle Berry stars in this version of Zora Neale Hurston's novel, adapted for television and produced by Oprah Winfrey. The story centers on Janie Crawford (Berry), a free-spirited woman who lives her life on her own terms. Refusing to accept her place as a black woman in the 1920s, Janie lives life to its fullest and experiences a journey filled with great joy and unbearable heartache. I enjoyed the casting choices because the actors and scenery joined to convey a part of the movies theme.
Marilyn’s mother Gladys’s best friend, Grace, became her guardian. Grace was the person who told her that she would become a movie star when she grew up. She would take her out to get her hair curled and let her wear makeup. They would often go out to see movies, which got Marilyn into really liking showbiz and the stars that were on the screen. Grace later married a man by the name of Ervin Silliman “Doc” Goddard.
She always talked endlessly about what her dress would be like and how she wanted a veil that floated freely down her face that could be pushed back over her head like in the movies. She looked absolutely breathtakingly beautiful and I couldn’t keep my eyes off her, not for one second. Everything she said, everything she did was unquestionably flawless. She has definitely done her six year old self proud. But the thing what still pained me was the fact that I couldn’t say any of this to her face.
