1984 Essay

I chose George Orwell’s “1984” as my text to respond on because he uses a variety of elements and techniques which are what makes this book a good read. He is able to develop a whole entire world which is thought provoking and inspiring. His ability to make the setting and plot believable draws the audience in and from there they can try to understand Orwell’s deep thoughts and how he analyzes things and the world in his writing.
Imagery is used to establish the mood of the society in the book. Dark imagery is used to create the terrifying influence of the state on its people. Orwell describes the streets being “roamed by gorilla-faced guards in black uniforms”, indicating how the government is using force to control its state. He also uses several animal images to represent the deterioration of humans and display the worsening conditions. In the book Winston visits a co-worker, Parsons, whose children are described as “gambolling of tiger cubs which will soon grow up into man-eaters”. This indicates how society is failing and civilization is slowly diminishing. Orwell used images that appear to be old and unclean to provide a dark setting. For example, Winston’s experience through the hallway that smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats creates an uncomforting feel. He also uses a simile when he compares the citizen’s home to “chicken-houses”, depicting a repulsive environment. Orwell uses descriptive words to create the image of a horrific future society and world.
Language is very different in the Party than how we know it. We use language for expression but in the party the idea is to limit language and therefore expression. The party wants to ultimately monitor and control thought, this would be impossible with a wide use of vocabulary.   Therefore with each edition of the dictionary they destroy numerous words. This is newspeak. It reduces and limits the number of words in the English language and removes words used to describe rebellion or independence....
