The Environmental Movement

The environmental movement is defined as a term that includes the conservation and green politics, is a diverse scientific, social, and political movement for addressing environmental issues. In other words, its public awareness of environmental issues. The environmental movement as a whole changed the way people viewed the environment and changed the way they treated it. Due to forces such as Silent Spring, Earth Day, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the environmental movement was able to rise greatly and have a huge impact on society.
The book Silent Spring written by Rachel Carson described in detail the impact that pesticides were having on birds and many other animals. The book was written ten years after the London smog, in which killed nearly 12,000 people. This book started a domino effect in the environmental movement. Not only did Rachel talk about the dangers of chemicals and toxic wastes but also how humans altered the environment as well. Due to the fact humans altered the environment, Rachel let readers know that they also has a responsibility to protect it. All of this work done by Rachel eventually forced congress to constrain the use of the pesticide DDT.
Secondly, Earth Day had an important impact on the movement as a whole. Earth Day is the largest civic event in the world, celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities. Senator Gaylord Nelson played the lead role in organizing the protest. Nelson wanted “to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the nationl agenda.” Many groups such as the Sierra Club and the Wilderness Society stemmed from Earth Day. Till this day, Earth Day still takes place on April 22, across the nation.
