To summarize Plato’s idea: “Education, then, is the means by which one arrives at the ultimate good,” (Webb and others 135) the education was considered as important and people realized long time ago how significant the education is. Education could lead people to a better life. Plato founded the education institution and gave lecture to the students. The purpose of studying at the time was to discover oneself and prepare people for participation in citizenship. (Webb and others 134) For the US several colleges were founded around 1700s, for example, Harvard College, Yale Universities, Brown University, and Dartmouth College. (“Colleges and”) Since people want to get the best education as much as they can, the college admissions become more competitive. There are three main factors that make college admissions get competitive, firstly, increasing number of the population in the US, secondly, rising number of international students, lastly, the need for secure future and better lifestyle.
For the first factor, assuming that the number of population gets higher and there were no new colleges built or built much slower than the growth of population, the competition will increase. The higher number of children in this generation causes from baby boomers, so there are many students graduated from high school. (Tyre) Some universities liked Binghamton University in 2007 accepts five percent lesser applications than the year before and stop accepting the applications six weeks earlier because of the over number of applications. Sending the applications also get easier through the internet, online application is available in almost every college. Many applicants have to be on the wait lists and on this process; they have low chance to get into those colleges. Fox, chairman of the admission-practices committee at the National Association for College Admission Counseling said “[wait lists] are oftentimes the most competitive part of the process.” (qtd. in Costello)...
