The two major persepective on stratification and social inequalities, functionalist and conflict, share few similaries and have many distinct differences. The functionalist persepective views society as a whole, where everyone plays a vital role in.Conflict persepective depicts several classes struggling over vital resources. Davis and Moore focus on the fuctional society filling essential positions, other wise society cannot survive. While on the other hand, Karl Marx view that economic forces are the ones shaping both society and individal, prestige and power.I believe that both perspectives are macroscopic views of sociology that both make equal sense in the concept of stratification and social inequalities.
Functionalist perspective tends to have classes function together as a whole and intergrating human beings into society. While a conflict perpective is a advantage to one group but a disadvatage to another. Usually being the rich versus the poor in society, the elite control the poor and the weak. Also, different is that they must function together or else the world will not be in unity, while the conflict is about compition with one another. An example of functionalist is when in demand jobs like nursing, are being filled to even out society and for conflict is when people struggle for their position. Society is straitified into two categories the rich and the poor. The similarity is that they are both theories on how society is shaped.
Not every part of society is functional, however functionalist expalin that social problems is the result of structural strain which similairity relates to conflict, for struggle of control. Socioeconomic status determines who is exploted and who dominates in society. For a society to remain healthy the most fuctionally positions must be filled and also the simple ones, while conflict is viewing it as only the most vital jobs in society are those that sustain life and the quality of life.
