The issue of technology being a part of modern life is a controversial one.   Some feel that the contribution of technology has made a positive impact on modern life and that technology helps improve the quality of life.   Others see that the contribution of technology has negatively impacted modern life and that technology is a force that has escaped from human control.   Technology has significantly improved from past years, but since the improvement there has been an overuse of technology and that is starting to create a negative effect on society.   An individual's over-dependence on/overuse of technology is detrimental to individuals, families, and societies as seen is E.M. Forster's story “The Machine Stops”, and in recent statistics concerning the impact of technology on young people.
There are many examples of the over-dependence on/overuse of technology in E.M. Forster's “The Machine Stops”. Forster’s “The Machine Stops” predicts a future where the world’s population relies solely on technology: from artificial air and light to the artificial machine that they live in. The Machine eventually breaks down and the people lose control of it, though, as a result they regain control of freedom and humanity.   Forster portrays an entirely indoor society, a society that looks only at the man-made. This condition began well before the citizens' underground life, as people had increasingly homogenized the earth: "What was the good of going to Pekin when it was just like Shrewsbury?" (10).
An overuse of/over-dependence on technology is detrimental to an individual's physical health, and as a result, is harmful to society.   Scientists say juggling e-mail, phone calls and other incoming information can change how people think and behave. They say our ability to focus is being undermined by bursts of information.   These play to a primitive impulse to respond to immediate opportunities and threats.
