Late Adulthood and End of Life PSY375 February 20, 2012 Late Adulthood and End of Life Late adulthood is one of the most rewarding times in our lives. As we mature throughout our years we begin to understand the effect of our surroundings and we implement the moral lessons that we have experienced in our life. During this time of our life we cherish the time we have with our family and friends, we have worked hard to earn all that we have in life and are in more of a position to enjoy life and all that it has to offer. At this point in life our overall health plays a crucial role in how we will spend the remaining years of our existence. Although genetics play a significant role in the quality of life during these final years, individuals who modify destructive lifestyles and embark on healthier options will experience an improvement in their health and sense of wellbeing (Berger, 2008). During this stage of adulthood, older adults remain socially active and independent rather than subjecting themselves to isolation and withdrawal (Berger, 2008). It is important that during this stage of life we focus on our health and staying busy and involved in the life of the people in our lives. It is really easy to engulf in the disadvantages of ageism and contribute to a premature decline. Along with high quality medical care and advanced technology the average life has increased substantially allowing ageing adults to be a valuable resource to younger generations. Healthy habits and daily routines are essential for promoting health and wellness into late adulthood. Habits such as smoking, excessive drinking, lack of exercise, and overeating cost many individuals their ability to maintain an active and independent lifestyle as they age (Berger, 2008).
