Nature Manipulation
Since the discovery of the DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid-hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms (Genetics Home Reference)-science has come a long way in medicine, technology, and pursuing the improvement of individuals’ lives. Even though this great discovery has provided us with better knowledge and advancement in many areas, it also has its opposing side. Many people are questioning the use of bio-engineering to what extend it is still ethical and it is use only for the sole purpose of improving the lives of people and no more. So, the question is: should human manipulate nature? There could be a thousand reasons why manipulation of nature is good and the inverse of who are we to play God. If bio-engineering eliminates old disease and prevent new ones, increase production in agriculture, and better the lives of people all in terms of medical research, I do believe we should manipulate nature.
For the longest time, disease has been among us and it has claimed many lives in the past due to the lack of medical knowledge and the inability to develop effective vaccines. Take for example, infectious polio, a viral disease which may affect the central nervous system and can leave a person paralysis; while the disease was commonly found in children, adults were highly affected with as well. One of the first major polio epidemics was reported in the United States in 1894, consisting of 132 cases, including some adults (Sass). Research trails after another finally brought scientists to the first successful trail of an effective vaccine in 1952. By this time, 58,000 cases of polio victims were reported in the United States alone, the most ever (Sass). If scientists did not manipulate nature’s work, this epidemic could have turned into a pandemic. Without the vaccine, today, the disease can be contracted just as easily as it was some 50 years ago. Through medical research and bio-engineer, many more...
