Recently, SIA won the prestigious Executive travel's coveted Airline of the Year award for 1997. In addition, SIA won gold awards for Best Airline to the Far East, Best Long-Haul Airline, Best Ground/Check-in Staff, and Best Airport Lounges; silver awards for Best Economy Class and Best Cabin Staff; and bronze awards for Best First Class and Best Inflight Entertainment. Other awards include Best Airline in the world for the fourth successive year in the 1997 Zagat Airline Survey, Top Airline in the Asian Wall Street Journal survey, and Best
Airline in the Pacific Asia Travel Association survey.3

sustainable growth, efficient and effective development and deployment of information technology (IT) is crucial for supporting and influencing
business strategies. Over the last five years, SIA has invested heavily in
computers, spending about S$60 million in hardware and S$8 million in
software. With these investments, SIA aims to exploit the latest develop-
ments in IT in all areas of its operations, with innovations such as inter-
active inflight entertainment system and more powerful yield management software.
The computer facilities at SIA are controlled mainly by the Manage-
ment Services Division (MSD) which has 1 director, 1 assistant director,
1 senior manager, 12 managers and over 300 staff responsible for the
