Carl Rogers
Carl Rogers was an influential American psychologist and among the founders of the Humanistic approach to psychology. A number of surveys, including several done after his death, found that more therapists named Rogers as a major influence on their thinking and clinical practice than any other person in psychology (including Freud). The Person-centered approach, his own unique approach to understanding personality and human relationships, found wide application in various domains such as psychotherapy and counseling organisations, and other group settings. From watching video clips of him and reading about him what comes across is a person who was caring and respectful of others, a man who found value in all people, yet was humble about his own achievements
In terms of his theory, there are three core conditions that he believed to be very important in the counseling relationship.
Empathy
Rogers believed that empathy is an essential ingredient of a helpful counseling relationship. Empathy is the capacity to recognize or understand another's state of mind or emotion. It is often described as the ability to "put oneself into another's shoes", or in a way experience another’s emotions in yourselfThis is achieved by paying careful attention to what the client says and their body language. When the counselor makes this effort to focus and understand it becomes easier for the client to understand themselves and move forward. It helps the client feel safe and understood.
Congruence
Congruence also called genuineness. Congruence is most important in counseling, according to Rogers. Congruence is defined as the counselor’s capacity to be genuine This means that, unlike the psychodynamic therapist who generally reveal little of their own personality in therapy, the humanistic approach is keen to allow the client to experience them as they really are.
