Curing Cultural Shock:
Working in an environment where you are subject to cultural shock, it’s necessary for the person to find ways to cater further loss of productivity. There are several ways that a worker can overcome the cultural shock. Many theories have been passed on it and some of the research we did is expressed in detail.
A person who is exposed to a new culture in an organization takes time in adapting to the new environment. He first should develop a know how of all the activities and trends within the organization. This will help him develop the relevant skills required to cope up with the new culture. His attitude and thinking should also be flexible in the new environment as per the requirements. For example if a person is very reserved and does not talk to people generally then in the new environment his colleagues may consider it as an insult of some kind or rude behavior on the part of the individual. So a person should socialize and adjust to the new environment with untiring effort on his part.
Here are some steps that can help a person to adjust in the new culture in an organization:
• Understand that initially, there are likely to be uncertainties and confusion.
• Observe how people in your new environment act in situations that are confusing to you. Try to understand their beliefs and why they behave as they do. Avoid being too judgmental; regard them as being merely different. The person has to make sense of the environment and have tolerance for differences and ambiguity.
• Remember the ways one has been able to reduce stress in difficult situations in the past and consider applying those methods in the present circumstances. Try to see the humor in confusing situations that you encounter; laughter is often the best "medicine”. A good sense of humor is vital if one has to adjust successfully.
