Indentured Servitude
Some would say the United States of America is the greatest place to live and some would differ only because they don’t live in the United States of America. A place where dreams become reality and reality becomes a dream. Then there are those that are shunned by most Americans and not thought about or not wanted to be seen. These are the unemployed or homeless, whether be of their own accord or for other undisclosed reasons. This problem can be solved through the legalization of indentured servitude.
For those of you who do not know what slavery is, it is defined as "the state of one bound in servitude as the property of a slaveholder or household". Some may claim that slavery has been eliminated in the United States, and in a way it has. Although the 13th amendment abolished slavery, it did not abolish voluntary slavery, or rather, indentured servitude. A slave in the 21st century is referred to as a “worker” who does labor for his slave holder, or rather his “employer”, who in turn pays the worker a salary. Similar to some slaves in earlier times, “workers” in the 21st century have individual and social rights. They are given the freedom of religion, the freedom to speak their own language, the freedom to marry and have a family. These freedoms were not given to those that were enslaved in North America, and are predominantly what led to the downfall of slavery and to the transformation of slaves into “workers”.
Contrary to belief, slavery was not just for African Americans. Although African Americans accounted for a greater deal of the population that was enslaved in North America, they were not alone. Poor Englishmen and Native Americans also were enslaved simultaneously with the African Americans. Not only was there a variety of races who were slaves, but also a variety of races who were slave holders. Americans enslaved Americans, Native Americans enslaved Native Americans, and African Americans enslaved African...
