Dear Mrs. Riechmann:
I am writing to you about an article that was published in your paper on Thursday September 20, 2007. The article I am writing to you about was entitled “Bush wants wiretap law made permanent.” I must strongly disagree with President Bush’s proposal because; I believe that it violates people’s rights even if they are not Americans. The fact is the phones that are being tapped are the American people, which violates our amendment rights. If we are trying to build a diplomatic government over there then how can we try to make wiretap laws permanent in their country for us to spy on them? This doesn’t make any sense what so ever to me, because we are violating the rights we are trying to make them believe they have. This totally goes against what we are trying to build over in Iraq and Afghanistan. I believe that if we are going to try to give them the same rights as us, but then turn around and say that we can violate them that totally defeats the purpose of the whole situation. Even if we would be more vulnerable to attack without this wiretap technology there are other ways I am sure to ensure our country’s safety from being attacked like we were 6 years ago. Also, we are pushing a democratic government on the Iraq people, but then we turn around and say we can still violate those rights that democratic government gives them. I don’t believe that us being in Iraq is a bad idea but I do believe that us violating the rights we are trying to give them is very wrong. Thank you for reading my letter.
Sincerely,
Amber Hesse
