How important are language and communication skills in the development of a child?

Babies learn to communicate before they are even born. While they are in the womb they can differentiate between the touch of their mother and others. They communicate by kicking in response to this touch and the sound of voices.
This communication is important as it builds a bond between mother and baby which is detrimental to the healthy emotional development of the child. A baby will look to their mother for security and comfort. These two basic needs to be met for the child to be able to learn and develop. If these needs are not met then a child will be distressed and will not be able to absorb what is going on around them. A baby can also communicate using their cries. A mother will learn to differentiate between her child’s cries and respond to these accordingly. A baby will also use eye contact and cooing. Although children with a hearing loss will stop babbling, if they grow up in a home with parents who can sign, they will follow the same patterns of development using their first language - signing - and will sign their first word at around the same age that children who can hear speak theirs.
It Is a good idea to talk to a baby and wait for her response. This helps set the pattern for later...
