Probably the best loved of American poets the world over is Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (“Henry Wadsworth Longfellow” Internet). Longfellow was born on February 27, 1807 in Portland, Maine, where his mind was stirred with different cultures and customs. Henry came from a long line of true Americans which includes a revolutionary war veteran, lawyers, and Mayflower passengers. He became a senior at Bowdoin College at the age of 19, where he would later become a professor after traveling to Europe a number of times. Starting as a professor, Longfellow taught the literary heritage of Europe and as his career progressed he opened a whole new world of American literature. Henry wrote a number of famous poems from Mother Goose poems to “Hyperion”, which foreshadowed his love for Frances Appleton. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow died on March 24, 1882. Incredibly intelligent, by the age of six, Longfellow already knew Latin grammar, read well, could spell and multiply (“Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: Most Popular Poet of the Nineteenth Century” Internet). Longfellow studied Algebra and Greek at age eight. Henry’s interest in writing was shown at a young age. His mother, being fond of music, had Henry take piano lessons. He also learned to play the flute. Thanks to his mother he developed a love of music and also poetry.
