In "A Farewell To Arms" by: Ernest Hemingway, American Fredric Henry and Englishman Catherine Blakely are serving in the Italian war. Fredric as a solider and Catherine as a nurse. When Fredric and Catherine first meet Fredric doesn’t think anything would come of a relationship with Catherine and Catherine was very self conscious of Fredric braking her heart. As time went by, their feelings for each other grew into a passionate love for one another and was the reason for Frederick’s desertion of the war, so that they could be together for the rest of their lives.
When Fredric returned from leave his roommate (who is a doctor) introduced him to a nurse that he had been seeing and one of her fellow nurses named Catherine Blakely. At first Frederic and Catherine were pretty conservative and shy toward one another. Soon they began dating in the sense that Frederic would go visit Catherine when ever he could. It wasn’t until after Catherine had told Frederic how strong she felt towards him and made him promise that he’d never leave her, that Frederic realized that Catherine was different from the other women that he had had one night stands with. He was in love with Catherine and he had never been in love with anyone or anything before.
Frederic is called away from his post at the front to help in another part of the country. Frederic ends up getting wounded in the leg and foot pretty severely by having the shack that he and his squad where having dinner in get hit by a bomb. When he is in the hospital his roommate tells him before he is transferred to a new hospital that Catherine is also being transferred to the same hospital in a few days. When Frederic arrives at the new hospital he finds that he is the only patient and that Catherine hasn’t arrived yet. When Catherine finally arrives a few weeks later she and Frederic spend nights together in his room careful not to get caught by other...
