The American Educational system is wrong in emphasizing academic grades and achievements rather than firsthand experience. This is a common mistake that we all see nowadays in the educational system. For example students graduating from top colleges with master’s and doctorate degrees and they still don’t know how to get the job done or accomplish a certain job in real life situations. So do we really need education to gain knowledge? Or is it just to achieve social acceptance in our community? Some might agree that education is necessary to have a successful future, but it’s not necessary for an artist to have to take calculus and physics to be able to graduate and work at the gallery that he wants. That is why the American educational system is wrong in emphasizing academic grades as the benchmark to how a person would perform in real life rather than the firsthand experience.
The educational system that we have in place nowadays is so obviously wrong that some of the teachers themselves tried to fight it, as Gatto has also thought that the schools were over teaching the students. When Gatto tried to go against the school he was fired as he mentioned in his essay “I once returned from a medical leave to discover that all evidence of my having been granted the leave had been purposely destroyed, that my job had been terminated” Gatto p153 which shows us what happened to a teacher who tried to go against the drift. I can only imagine then that if a student tried to oppose the educational system he would end up failing all his classes until he follows.
Anyon felt the same as Gatto felt towards education, so she kept following the root of the problem. That’s when she found the reason, it’s not about making life more complicated for the next generation. It’s about the social class, they want to differentiate one person from another, and after all we can’t all be doctors and engineers.
