Ethics of Touch
Ethics of touch can be interpreted in several different ways depending on the view point of an individual. After watching the film, “Ethics of Touch” by David Hingsburger, he covered a crucial amount of points that have caught my attention. Knowing the importance of the points that David has mentioned, it got me to realize that they have the potential to stir up some controversy in a conversation regarding supporting people with disabilities, depending on what an individual believes to be appropriate or not. I found the Ethics of Touch film extremely beneficial and applicable when supporting individuals within their home, or in group homes. The points that truly struck a cord with me were; having a solid defined group of staff, the privacy and boundaries of an individual, and the comfort and emotional levels individuals have with the staff.
As I grow more familiar with the field, I have learnt that the individuals with disabilities can communicate on different levels with different people. Since they may all be at different levels, they may not all have the chance to get to know the staff that is supporting them as well as they may want to. Even though the individuals can be on a different level, I strongly believe that they should still have an opportunity to get to know the staff that will be supporting them in their day to day activities. If the individuals do not get this chance, I think that as a solid well defined staff, it is their responsibility to take the time to get to know the person that they may be supporting. I know that if I was in that position, I would want the staff to take the time to get to know me. Otherwise, how can you create any trust between the two people? David also says that no personal care should be given by a staff member during their first six months on the job.
