Enlgish: how Texts potray differents contexts (Uluru written by Ruby Langford and the letter by Rachael Hennings) Essay

“Uluru” written by Ruby Langford and the “letter” by Rachael Henning’s are two texts that portray two different contexts. To examine the difference between the two texts, certain features or aspects of the texts need to be considered. These features or aspects include level of language, values and attitudes portrayed and the mention of differing of transport.


The level of language in the two texts expresses their contexts. The text (in form of a letter) by Rachael Henning is formal. This is shown by the use of salutations such as “My dearest Anne“, which texts from the past unlike modern ones, such a Uluru which I are informal   as colloquial language is used such as “coo-eed…buckjumping…gonna” which would be used in informal situations. The structuring in Henning’s text would be typical of her context or of the past,   a person writing a letter   in her time to a friend would be well structured with well written paragraphs, whereas as today texts such as letters written to a s friend   are informal as shown in Uluru through the use thin paragraphs and short sentences such as “I’ve never been on a plane either”. As context changes, the way texts are written also change to compliment with the change. As seen in Rachael Henning’s’ text where expressions such as “gold digger…two ladies sleeping together” meant completely different from today. Gold digger today would mean someone portrayed in a sexual way whereas in the past it would mean someone working in a mine and “ladies sleeping together” today would mean sexual relations between people of the same sex. The level of language in both texts compliment with the context.

The values and attitudes portrayed in a text give away the context. In Rachael Henning’s text, the values and attitudes depicted reflect those of the past as they were mainly based on class and cultural references. The main character in the text is wealthy or from a higher class as is it shown by her attitude towards characters in a lower class....
