Educating The Future

There are few who would argue that the youth of today are the hope of tomorrow, but these hopes are nothing without the guiding hand of education. Education makes it possible for society to improve and advance, which is why I have decided to major in History Education. With degrees in this major, teachers are able to pass along a wide variety of essential knowledge in the field of social studies to developing minds, to help the next generation of Americans succeed and improve the world. A few important facets of social studies that can be taught with my major are America's government, geography of the world, and the history of civilization.
One very important part of social studies is basic political science, which I believe is becoming more and more neglected. A key part of becoming successful citizens is knowledge about how the government works, but it is becoming more and more common to see people who know very little about our government. It is becoming the standard to be blissfully unaware of national politics, probably largely due to a lack of understanding of these politics and our government. I feel that it is important to teach the next generation to be more politically aware, to help them understand more fully the Constitution, the reasons behind separation of power within the government, the inner workings of political campaigns, and much more. I fear that without this knowledge less and less people will be politically aware, and it will become increasingly difficult to elect responsible and capable officials, and therefore more difficult for our nation to remain as prestigious as it is today.
Once people understand how their own country works, it is then important for them to gain knowledge about the rest of the world. This is the golden age of globalization, where all the countries in the world are becoming increasingly interconnected, and in order for our nation to be successful, our people need to have basic knowledge of the rest...
