IDEA
IDEA is our nation's special education law. IDEA stands for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the law that outlines rights and regulations for students with disabilities in the U.S. who require special education. Is a federal statute whose purpose is to ensure a free and appropriate education services for children with disabilities who fall within one of the specific disability categories as defined by the law. Under the IDEA, all children with disabilities are entitled to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least-Restrictive Environment (LRE), and some are entitled to Early Intervention (EI) and Extended School Year (ESY). The law specifies how schools must provide or deny services, and how parents can fight school districts for them. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the federal special education law. Initially passed in 1975, it places an affirmative obligation on school districts to locate, identify, and serve children with disabilities from age 3 through 21 or high school graduation. In 2004, IDEA was amended significantly and passed into law. Many of the provisions in this new IDEA law became effective on July 1, 2005. As the new law is analyzed and new federal regulations are developed, we will attempt to share information with you. In addition to the Federal IDEA law and regulations, visitors are encouraged to become familiar with their respective state laws and regulations affecting students with disabilities. IDEA provides federal funding to schools to provide services to children with disabilities. IDEA applies only to individuals who meet the criteria for one or more specific conditions or impairments and who, because of the impairment, require special education and related services.
