Prejudice, discrimination. Think of the person given a job or denied a job simply because of their sex, their race, or their sexual orientation. How about the soldier who goes to war to fight for his country, to defend the freedoms he is so openly denied in his own country, only to be told that he can't carry a weapon, command a platoon, simply because he is not heterosexual. Yes, I think that our country is still openly discriminatory. At what point does your sexual orientation make it difficult to fight for your country, or lead a group of people, or decide who you love and should be able to marry? I haven't been directly discriminated against, but that doesn't mean that I haven't been discriminated against in some indirect manner. I am a white heterosexual male, and in some ways I have been discriminated against. I don't think certain groups in our society would run to my rescue if I was being discriminated against or imprisoned for an unjust reason. I don't think they would go to the aid of anyone kicked out of the military for sexual preference, but aren't these also forms of discrimination. I think we, as a society, have made great improvements in regards to the discrimination of women, and members of different racial groups. but have created discriminations against other groups.
I don't think we will ever be able to get rid of prejudices, or to totally do away with discrimination. We all face prejudice influences from the moment we are able to comprehend. Think of the TV sitcom that shows black people interacting with mostly black people, or white people only interacting with a majority of white people. Both of these with the occasional token thrown in the show to make things equal. Or how about the magazine ads that imply to us that 100 pound women are the only beautiful women in our society. These are all forms that help promote individual prejudices and lead to discrimination. So in conclusion it is important to do both, although we...
