4. What are some risk factors for suicide in old age? Why are some groups of elders at greater risks of suicide than others? Do you know of any elderly person who has committed suicide? The purpose of this final essay is to do research and find out what are some of the risk factors for suicide in old age. While doing research on some of the risk factors for suicide in old age, reasons why some groups of elders are at greater risks of suicide than others, will also be a part the research for this essay. Suicide can be characterized by two different factors, one as a subject of intense controversy called assisted suicide or physician-assisted suicide (PAS), which occurs when someone else provides the means by which an individual ends his or her life. Suicide is also referred to as a process of self-neglect; is when an individual voluntarily choose to end his or her life by being passive-allowing death or active-by causing death. According to the text, there are several different risk factors for suicide in older adults. A serious physical illness with severe pain, the sudden death of a loved one, a major loss of independence or financial inadequacy, statements that indicate frustration with life and a desire to end it, a sudden decision to give away one’s social and physical environment, and isolation and a feeling of being cut off from others are all risk factors for suicide in older adults. Suicide rates are higher among older white males and an explanation for this is that they generally experience the greatest incongruence between their ideal self-image (that of worker, decision maker, or holder of relatively high status in society) and the realities of advancing age.
