Imagine losing your best friend, your child, and your home all in one day. With a proposed amendment banning same-sex marriages, a situation like that could easily happen to a homosexual. With no federal or state protections, a same-sex relationship holds absolutely no legal ground and therefore a person in a same-sex relationship can lose all of their material possessions as well as everything they hold dear in the blink of an eye. With no federal or state protections, a same-sex relationship holds absolutely no legal grounds, and therefore a person in a same-sex relationship can lose all of their material possessions as well as everything they hold dear. The proposed ban on gay marriage (and the rights that come with it) will affect an estimated 3.1 million people living together in same-sex relationships in the United States (Human Rights Campaign, 3). My partner and I are two of those people.
There are several reasons why banning same-sex marriage is wrong. First, a constitutional amendment has never before been adopted that would limit the states’ ability to control their own family law or discriminate against any class. Secondly, excluding same-sex couples from marrying violates their dignity. And lastly, the majority of the arguments supporting the ban are based on a majority religion (Christianity), which by law is unconstitutional (the separation of church and state).
To completely understand the issues at hand in the gay rights movement, a person must first understand why men and women...
