Computer hardware is no longer a major barrier to wide use of wireless information systems. In fact, some may argue that wireless is the way of life in this day and age. If you take a look at some of the recent developments in the past few years, you may wonder just how many more years before everything dealing with computers will be wireless. Using a wireless information system gives businesses mobility and also takes away all the expenses that come with cabling. A number of today’s leading industries are shifting towards wireless information systems due to their belief that it offers a higher ROI (return on investment) because of increased productivity.
There are a number of hardware devices that are used in wireless information systems including network routers, network adapters, and wireless access points. Wireless network routers are the foundation of an all-wireless home WLAN. Home broadband routers based on the 802.11b or 802.11g standards combine the functions of a traditional switch, firewall, and wireless access point. Wireless routers that support the 802.11g Wi-Fi standard are compatible with 802.11b products and generally offer better performance and security features. Wireless network adapters enable devices to communicate with each other over WiFi or other wireless networking protocols. Wireless access points (APs or WAPs) are specially configured devices on Wi-Fi local area networks (WLANs). Access points act as a central transmitter and receiver of WLAN radio signals devices to communicate with each other over WiFi or other wireless networking protocols.
Technology improvements enable the building of information systems which can be used "any place, any time", through mobile and wireless devices and networks.
