ROLE OF CHOCOLATE IN STRESS REDUCTION Hira Syed NUST Business School The study investigated whether eating chocolates reduces stress and comforts an individual who is suffering from this mental illness. The sample consisted of 20 individuals aged between 20-50 years. The hypothesis was that eating chocolates will reduce the level of stress and will comfort a person suffering from this disorder. Stress level was monitored by using the four body readings: heart rate, body temperature, brain waves and blood pressure. The readings were taken down carefully before and after the intake of chocolates. The results showed that intake of chocolates reduced the level of stress by lowering the readings of above four tools used for stress measuring. After the chocolates were eaten the readings were lying in the normal range. Hence, the research hypothesis was confirmed. Researches show that stress is the most common health disorder around the globe. Stress is defined as a normal physiological response of the body to situations or stimulus which are perceived as 'dangerous' to the body. Stress can affect anyone and everyone at some point of time in their life. When it occurs frequently it affects health - both physical and mental. There are various options available for the relief of stress discusses Frohm (1999) .A balanced nutritious food and simple deep breathing exercises are the simplest methods for stress relief. They are cost effective, easily available and are without side effects. Food that reduces stress acts mainly by their vitamins and mineral contents. A very common practice among the people is that they eat chocolates in large quantities to relieve stress. Chocolate is high in tryptophan, an essential amino acid that increases the production of serotonin, antidepressants and stress relievers. More people are turning to sugary and fatty foods
