On Saturday, April 18, 2009 President Barrack Obama gave his weekly address. On this particular Saturday President Obama addressed the issue of the economy. He discussed the reason behind his decision to name Jeffrey Zients to serve as Deputy Director for Management of the Office of Management and Budget and as the first ever Chief Performance Officer and Aneesh Chopra to serve as America’s Chief Technology Officer.
He also discussed how in the year 2000 there was a projected budget surplus in the trillions and when he took office eight years later than was a projected budget deficit of $1.3 trillion. He discusses some of his plans for the future economy of our government and what he is planning to do for the people. He further explains that there must be government must restore a sense of responsibility and accountability for their actions.
President Obama explains that Washington needs to develop a system where politicians and bureaucrats are held accountable for the decisions he or she makes. President Obama states, “If we’re going to rebuild our economy on a solid foundation, we need to change the way we do business in Washington. We need to restore the American people’s confidence in their government – which it is on their side, spending their money wisely, to meet their families needs” (Obama, B. 2009, Para. 8).
The article explains how he plans on turning the government into an agency that is accountable to the citizens. The government has begun by scouring through the budget line by line to see where costs can be cut, to go through every government program and to eliminate those programs that are not working and add ones that will work. He also talks about ending tax breaks for companies shipping jobs overseas; stopping the fraud and abuse in our Medicare program; and reforming our health care system to cut costs to families and businesses.
