Aside from being a serious health risk, children that suffer from obesity are subjected to social consequences that often continue into adulthood. The United States has been known for the larger population of our overweight adults, now our adults are not our only problem, the youth of our nation have taken on the awful eating habits of their parents, aunts, uncles, and even peers. There's not just one explanation of why our children have been getting so big, the reasons range from genetics to socioeconomic status. Sadly this often un-talked about issue refers to both children and adolescents, thus the term “childhood obesity.” Generally when the word "children” is used it refers to six to eleven years of age, and when the word "adolescents" is used it typically refers to twelve to seventeen years of age.

As video games and television become more and more popular, kids are getting less and less active. Some studies show that children would rather stay inside then go ride bikes or play on a playground. Regular exercise is a part of any growing child’s daily routine. More than a third of young people in grades 9-12 do not regularly engage in vigorous-intensity physical activity.
