In "Pygmalion" a play by Bernard Shaw, Eliza Doolittle
does not change her habits. This guttersnipe is paranoid
throughout the whole play. She might not know it, but her
character shows insecurity. Not all the manners in the world
could take away her rudeness. Lieing was the most common
thing she did. Vengeance is one of Eliza's cruel intentions she keeps throughout the play.. Pickering was thanked by Eliza constantly throughout the play.
Eliza is paranoid. Her reactions to situations are as if she
was a criminal. In the beginning of the play there was a note
taker writing down notes on how she speaks, once someone
mentioned him she reacted "[springing up terrified] I aint done
nothing wrong..." (13) when all he was doing was writing down
notes. Henry was joking around with Eliza, when he told her "At the end of six months you shall go to....If the King finds out youre not a lady...your head will be cut off..."(34). Eliza having regrets, thinking she is in trouble she tells Henry "I always been a good girl;...I never offered to say a word to him; and I dont owe him nothing..."(35), that is a sign of being worried of what can happen to her. After the Ball Eliza encounters an argument with
Higgins leading her to be paranoid about her future "Whats to
become of me?..."(76). Before she decides to leave Henry's
house she asks him if she can take her clothes without having
problems "I dont want to be accused of stealing."(79), even
though nobody had use for those clothes.
Eliza's character is insecure about herself. In
the begginning Henry suggests he can turn Eliza into someone
wife and her response was "Whood marry me?"(31), meaning
who would possibly want me?. When she was welcomed at
Henry's house Mrs. Pearce shows her the room she will sleep
in and she thought she was not good enough for it. "I couldnt
sleep here, missus. It's too good for the like of me."(35). Eliza
leaves Henry...
