One of great challenge in health care is how to integrate appropriately our own values and beliefs into the professional practice. The strong connection between the patient and nurse is a wonderful opportunity to manifest mutual feelings, recognized strengths, fears, choices, faith, and goals. Nurses should be aware and sensitive to the patient’s conflicts, personal drama, and experience. The nurse’s spiritual and moral support is a useful tool to promote well-being and contribute to assist the patient to cope better with the difficult life events. The understanding of the patient needs will provide an essential connection to initiate the spiritual caregiving.The complete acknowledgment of their illness in all their nuances: physical, physiological, and spiritual will make possible to us promote meaning, hope, love and other spiritual qualities to the patient.
Circumstantially, nurses are in privilege position to influence the patient’s behavior. The daily care and the relationship created on the mutual trust, make possible the patient and nurse develop an especial connection that will allow both exchange their insights and thoughts. It is crucial to be very careful about the meaning of this approach, and understand when or what it is appropriate to disclose with the patients. Some patients will be comforted with this exchange; others may become annoyed and experience some level of loss of confidence in the nurse. The dialogue should be established with respect and we must be prepared to share mutual beliefs, values, and emotions without any criticism or prevalence. Everyone has their own way to assimilate and to express the experience of life, which can diverge widely depending on their ethnicity, religion, race, gender, and social status.
