In recent years the incidence of cardiac failures has increased to an abnormal extent in the developed countries. This is particularly observed in the obese individuals. Obesity may be described as excessive Body mass index of an individual which causes disturbance in the usual activity of a person. Here body mass index can be defined as the normal limit of mass of an individual in relation to his height. Obesity though not a direct cause of morbidity or mortality of an individual has implications in life threatening diseases like atherosclerosis, diabetes, muscular dystrophy, Osteoarthritis and many others. Hence obesity is now categorized as disease.
Obesity is the major concern for its implication especially in atherosclerosis(cardiac failure) and diabetes. For instance, Atherosclerosis is not an over night complication developed by obese individuals but is a slow process. It starts with excess fat in the obese individual getting converted into low density lipoproteins(LDL). These LDL travel through the blood and invades the endothelium of vessel walls in the heart. This invasion triggers the recruitment of Smooth muscle cells on to the vessel wall. These cells absorb the LDL and get converted into Foam cells. The foam cells get deposited on the vessel wall. The deposition of these foam cells continue and at a stage blocks the blood vessel. This blockage of blood vessels in the heart leads to heart failure or stroke leading to death or a serious health complication. This is one among many complications caused due to obesity.
With the above example one can identify the need for a serious research on ways to control obesity of an individual. The researchers are focusing on decreasing the calorie content of the food products which is not a great solution for the problem, the reason being the wider variety of food choice present and also due to the essentiality of usage of fats for their importance in adding taste to the food.
