What does it mean to be in the “working poor” social class? What types of people work these jobs and why are has this particular social class become so vital in our world today? Working class jobs are ones that are essential in the functionality of this nation, let alone Seattle, they are ones we take for granted. These are the low skill low paying jobs that many times go unsought of or under appreciated. The people behind these working jobs are the ones responsible for making that conference room look clean and well kept; politely handling your frustrated question over the telephone; making sure you have a pleasant experience when dinning out for a meal; or seeing that your loved one gets taken care of when brought to the hospital. These are jobs we clearly cannot live without, yet go unrecognized every day.
This working class is largely comprised of white, 21 to 40 year-olds with an education equivalent to or greater than a high school diploma. This may come as a surprise, since many may think the immigration or multi-cultural population would have the greater percentage. These statistics goes to prove how much of a crisis the economy is in. Young people are nearly forced to have to put themselves in debt by entering college because most jobs require a form of college education. With that being said, people are still needed to work the lower level jobs and with the sellout of good paying jobs to overseas countries for a cheaper cost, many of these educated peoples are left with no other alternative than these lower paying jobs.
While everybody wants to end up in a high paying job, it is not a realistic idea. We are always going to need “blue-collared workers”. The necessity of the working class is clear; we need them in order for our society to run as efficiently as possible.
