A quick reference for the
College of Science & Engineering

There is no set way to come up with the “perfect resume.” Different employers will have different preferences. As an applicant, you must find a resume that will best display your strengths.

The two keys to a successful resume are: organization and pin-pointing qualities that set you apart from other applicants.

Organization
The easiest way to establish organization is to highlight sections using caps lock, bolding, underlining, and italics. You want to be careful overusing these functions, but you definitely want the employer to be able to navigate through an orderly, concise resume.
• Headings:
o You must use “EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS”
o Headings such as “OBJECTIVE, QUALIFICATIONS, HONORS, ORGANIZATIONS” are optional but helpful
o The header “REFERENCES: Available upon request” or listing your references on your resume is popular, but unnecessary and should be avoided. The employer realizes that if he/she asks for references, you will provide them. Usually references will be required on an application form or the employer will ask for references after an interview. References should be on a separate page and use the same letterhead and format you used on your resume. Consistency is key!
