My coaching philosophy has adapted each year I have coached. I started my first coaching job very young and did not understand the importance of having my own values and beliefs. I find that even week by week my goals for both my players and myself continue to change. I have learned so much about who I am as a person through the people I have worked with and this has changed my core beliefs. Although I think it is important to be able to modify some aspects of your philosophy I will always stress the importance of Accountability, Commitment, and Repetition.
Enthusiasm, encouragement and personal attention towards each player is very important towards a successful team. Cheer the areas where you see improvement in individuals and the team as a group. Effort and focus will lead to a successful season. I try to never miss a chance to encourage, challenge and teach. A great way to teach is to point out with a positive approach where additional improvement is possible. If this worked every time, we would all be great coaches. But it doesn’t. I stress the importance of encouraging all the great things my athletes do because I feel it is even more important to intensely coach subpar efforts. It is easy to say but to really pay strict attention to detail is a tough duty. The focus that is required to hold players accountable for their efforts and actions is a grinding task but the outcome could possibly save your job. As individuals bad habits start out as little things and in time could bring down a whole team. How my point gets across to the player or team is different with every situation but it must be made clear what is acceptable and what is unacceptable. As a season progresses it is a goal of mine that the players can hold themselves and each other accountable. Always coach on the run and correct or praise on every play. It has to be one or the other.
