Oak Grove, Minnesota Windshield Survey
Oak Grove nestles on the northern border of Anoka County in Minnesota. Because the city contains large groves of oak trees, hence the name, Oak Grove. This is a small, rural city that became a township in 1857 and in 1993 it incorporated into a city. An individual would not even know this is a city when driving through the area because it does not have a city setting with street corners and businesses but it has character. The following information contains the aspects of “community,” that focuses specifically on community, community health, and community as a client. I am an Infection Prevention nurse and the following information will also include how the Healthy People 2020 health indicator, “prevent, reduce, and ultimately eliminate healthcare-associated infections (HAIs)” applies to this area of practice (“HealthyPeople.gov.”, 2012). The windshield survey includes the information about the community of Oak Grove and the aspects that could affect the health of its residents.
Defining “Community” Aspects
Defining Community
Defining community is difficult because there are multiple definitions from multiple organizations, writers, and theorists (William & Stanhope, 2008). The World Health Organization states, “A community is a social group determined by geographic boundaries and/or common values and interests. Its members know and interact with one another. It functions within a particular social structure and exhibits and creates norms, values and social institutions” (William & Stanhope, 2008, p. 342). Some definitions list typologies to classify communities other than defining a community specifically. These classifications not only include categories, such as geographic locations and government agencies but also how they interact with each other and problem-solving abilities. The essence of community defined is the coming together of individuals or people with shared interests and concerns.
